AnyDesk Modes: Portable vs. Installed

When using AnyDesk, you have the option to run it in three different modes, each with its own unique characteristics and capabilities. These modes include:

  1. AnyDesk Without Installation (Portable Mode)
  2. AnyDesk Without Installation but With Elevation
  3. AnyDesk With Installation

Each mode has specific features that cater to different needs and usage scenarios.

AnyDesk Without Installation (Portable Mode)

In this mode, AnyDesk does not require administrative credentials to operate, making it convenient to use without extensive system privileges. It does not run automatically on device startup, and needs to be manually launched for access. The program will close completely when all instances of the main AnyDesk window are shut down. Additionally, it cannot exist outside the current user session and does not support remote restart or AnyDesk-Alias setup. While it offers unattended access after startup, it has limitations in interacting with UAC prompts and system actions.

AnyDesk Without Installation but With Elevation

This mode elevates the AnyDesk client to a higher privilege level, allowing connecting users to interact with UAC prompts. The client does not run at Windows startup and must be manually launched, but it can exist outside the user session and offers unattended access after startup. However, administrative credentials are necessary for elevating the AnyDesk client.

For instructions on elevating an AnyDesk client, visit Administrative Privileges and Elevation (UAC).

AnyDesk With Installation

By installing AnyDesk on a remote device, the AnyDesk Global Service is also installed, allowing AnyDesk to remain running while minimizing its windows. It can exist outside the current user session and can be accessed even after signing or logging out. This mode supports remote restart, unattended access, and offers the full range of features, including interaction with UAC prompts and setting up AnyDesk-Alias.
